Notarized documents are often required for a document to be legally recognized, and in other cases it is an optional step for authentication. The notary system helps prevent fraud by having a registered person who has qualified as a notary verify the person’s identity before watching them sign a document. Each notary has his or her own seal, and takes responsibility for having verified the signer’s identity and, in some cases, administered an oath or affirmation to the person signing the document.
To act as a notary in the state of North Carolina, a person must meet several qualifications. If the notary is not a licensed attorney, they must pass a notary public course.
